Austria Has 13.6 Million Parking Spaces

A Technical University of Graz study reveals Austria holds 13.6 million parking spaces, covering 317 square kilometers across the nation.

The 'Parking Space Insight' project, managed by the FFG and funded by the Climate and Energy Fund, used 50 digital data layers to analyze Austria's parking infrastructure for 2026. Findings show that parking spaces occupy over 31,700 hectares, representing a significant portion of the country's 3,000 square kilometers of sealed surfaces. With a 2025 car stock of 5.3 million vehicles and a density of 573 cars per 1,000 inhabitants, the data indicates a surplus of spaces. Off-street surface lots comprise 10.5 million spots, while on-street parking and garages account for 10 and 12 percent respectively. Regionally, Vienna maintains 0.67 spaces per inhabitant, compared to 0.74 in Graz. These figures contrast with international cities like Paris, which has 0.35 spaces per person after removing 60,000 spots since 2015, and Barcelona at 0.48.
