Hitler Birthplace Reopens as Police Station

Interior Minister Gerhard Karner opens the new police center at Salzburger Vorstadt 15 following a comprehensive building renovation.

The renovation of Adolf Hitler's birthplace in Braunau am Inn is complete, with Interior Minister Gerhard Karner opening the new police center on Wednesday morning. Designed by Marte.Marte Architekten Feldkirch, the building's appearance now reflects its 17th-century origins, featuring white plaster instead of yellow and rectangular window shapes. The property, which once housed an inn where Hitler lived, was taken over by the NSDAP in 1938 before being returned to the original owner post-war. After serving as a school and a facility for Lebenshilfe, the building stood empty from 2011 until the Republic of Austria expropriated it in 2016. Following recommendations from an expert commission, the site now serves an official-administrative purpose. A memorial stone against fascism remains in front of the entrance, and officers stationed there will receive specialized training regarding right-wing extremism.
