Salurn Pool Sets Exclusive Hours for Muslim Women
A public pool in Salurn, South Tyrol, will offer exclusive swimming hours for Muslim women starting July 2026 to promote social inclusion.
Starting the week after July 22, 2026, the Salurn public pool will host exclusive sessions for Muslim women on Mondays from 6:30 PM to 7:30 PM. Leaseholder Luca Lechthaler scheduled these sessions outside regular hours as a contribution to inclusion. During this time, burkinis—covering the body except for the face, hands, and feet—are permitted. Mayor Roland Lazzeri stated the leaseholder can independently decide on extra offers. The move has drawn mixed reactions: Lega Deputy Leader Silvia Sardone called it "absurd," and Roland Stauder of the Freiheitlichen party labeled it a sign of failed integration. However, SVP Senator Julia Unterberger described the initiative as a gesture of sensitivity and social inclusion.
