Government Proposes Social Media Ban for Under-14s

The government introduced a draft law to ban social media for children under 14 by 2027 and mandate age verification for adult websites.

During Monday's summer ministerial council, the government presented a draft law banning social media for children under 14, scheduled to take effect in 2027. The legislation targets addiction-promoting algorithms, including endless scrolling and recommendation systems featuring content from strangers. Additionally, the Ministry of Media under Andreas Babler (SPÖ) confirmed to 'profil' that mandatory age verification will be required for erotic websites. Digitalization State Secretary Alexander Pröll (ÖVP) noted that users can verify their age via ID Austria or private providers, with the system functioning automatically after a one-time registration per device. Pröll emphasized that only the user's age will be shared during this process, ensuring that names, addresses, and other sensitive data remain private and protected.
