Vienna Releases New Sun Protection Design Guide
Vienna's MA 19 department has issued a new guide for external sun protection to reduce indoor heat and cooling needs across the city.
The City of Vienna's Architecture and Urban Design department (MA 19) has published "Sonnenschutz und Stadtbild," a guide offering sun protection solutions for various building types and facades. According to MA 19 head Franz Kobermaier, the guide assists owners, planners, and residents in selecting external options like roller shutters, blinds, and awnings. These installations effectively reduce interior heat and lower cooling requirements. Selection depends on window types, opening directions, and facade designs, with the city recommending a uniform look for street-side facades. Special regulations apply in protection zones and building ban areas. Residents must submit a building notification to MA 37 (Building Inspection) before installation. Additionally, the City of Vienna provides subsidies for retrofitting external sun protection devices.
