Samariterbund Warns of Dangerous Heatwave Risks
Prof. Dr. Michael Gruska warns that heatwaves cause more deaths in Austria than traffic accidents, urging caution for vulnerable groups.
The Samariterbund warns that heatwaves pose significant health risks, with rescue calls increasing by up to 20 percent on hot days. Prof. Dr. Michael Gruska notes that heat causes more annual deaths in Austria than road accidents. City centers remain 2.5 degrees warmer by day and up to five degrees warmer at night than rural areas. Risks like heat exhaustion and sunstroke increase above 30 degrees, particularly for children, the elderly, pregnant women, outdoor workers, and the chronically ill. To stay safe, drink more fluids, eat light meals, wear airy clothing, and stay in cool rooms. Windows should be closed during the day and opened at night. Strenuous activities should be moved to morning or evening hours. Never leave children or animals in parked cars. For critical symptoms, call 144. All emergency vehicles feature air conditioning.
