Vienna Opens Facility for Young Repeat Offenders

Vienna-Simmering launches the Auszeit-WG project for offenders aged 11 to 13, providing intensive support for up to twelve weeks.

The Auszeit-WG project for young repeat offenders under 14 has launched in Vienna-Simmering. A 13-year-old boy was admitted roughly one week before July 22, 2026, and a second child is expected soon. The facility provides two care places for children aged 11 to 13 who have committed serious offenses such as robbery or burglary. Stays last up to twelve weeks and feature intensive pedagogical support. Delayed from May to July 2026 for structural adaptations, the project operates under the Vienna Child and Youth Welfare Act and the Home Stay Act. Vice Mayor Bettina Emmerling noted the start as the Ministry of Justice continues a year-long study on closed facilities. Despite its opening, the project has faced criticism from the Vertretungsnetz and the Ombudsman Board.
