Vienna Greens Criticize City Heat Protection Plan

Vienna Greens leader Peter Kraus slams the SPÖ-Neos heat plan, demanding free pool access and a city-wide crisis team amid rising heat.

On Tuesday, July 28, 2026, the Vienna Greens criticized the SPÖ-Neos city government's heat protection measures. While Mayor Michael Ludwig's administration introduced extended hours at four of the city's 30 municipal pools and two new cool zones at the Wien Museum and Europahaus, Green leader Peter Kraus called for free pool entry on extreme heat days. Currently, Vienna operates 37 cool zones, with four set to open Sunday, August 2. The KPÖ Vienna also demanded free pool access for the entire summer. City Councilor Jürgen Czernohorszky noted Vienna offers 63 kilometers of free bathing areas. The urgency follows a heat wave where the Vienna Professional Rescue Service handled over 1,400 missions in 72 hours, a 50 percent increase. In the 5th district, Green Chairman Michael Luxenberger noted that evening cool zones require extra MA 34 personnel.
