Austrian Road Injuries Rise in First Quarter

Statistik Austria reports 8,011 road injuries and 67 deaths from January to March, marking a continuous increase in injuries since 2022.

Road traffic injuries in Austria reached 8,011 in the first quarter, with Upper Austria recording the highest total at 1,573 people. Lower Austria followed with 1,540 injuries and the highest fatality count at 24 deaths. Both states saw significant injury increases of 11% and 10% respectively, while Vienna and Salzburg were the only regions to report declines. Across the country, 67 people died in traffic accidents, though no fatalities occurred in Vienna or Burgenland. Approximately 52% of those killed were car occupants, while 11 were pedestrians and nine were in trucks. Car passenger injuries hit a five-year high at 4,662, an increase of 220 over the previous year. Data shows that 10% of car occupants suffered serious injuries, and 83% of those who died were wearing seatbelts at the time of the accident.
