New 40 Million Euro Water Pipeline for Styria

Styria forms a new water association to build a 33km pipeline from Graz to Leibnitz, addressing rising demand from population growth.

The newly founded Wasserverband Transportleitung Steiermark Süd, comprising the Umland Graz, Leibnitzerfeld, Leibnitzerfeld Süd, and Vulkanland associations, will invest 40 million euros in a 33-kilometer-long water transport pipe. Running from Feldkirchen bei Graz to Leibnitz, the 60-centimeter-thick pipe and a new large elevated tank near Wildon are scheduled for construction over the next five years. This project, part of a 2024 provincial strategy, aims to transport water reserves from northern Styria to the south, where population growth accounts for two-thirds of future additional demand. Key figures involved in the initiative include Provincial Councilor Simone Schmiedtbauer, Association Chairman and Feldbach Mayor Josef Ober, Mayor Daniel Kos of the FPÖ, and Deputy Governor Manuela Kohm of the ÖVP.
