Green Party Rejects Federal Prosecutor Proposal

The Green Party will not support the current legislative draft for a Federal Prosecutor's Office, justice spokesperson Alma Zadić says.

During a press conference on July 24, 2026, Green Party justice spokesperson and former Minister of Justice Alma Zadić announced that the party will not support the coalition government's current proposal for a Federal Prosecutor's Office. The reform, which requires a two-thirds majority to pass, aims to replace the current system where public prosecutors are subject to instructions from the Minister of Justice. The proposed model by the ÖVP, SPÖ, and NEOS coalition features a three-person leadership with six-year terms and at least ten years of criminal justice experience. While the draft includes a selection commission and allows for impeachment before the Constitutional Court, it has faced rejection from the Procurator General's Office and Higher Regional Court presidents. The consultation period for the legislative draft remains open until August 31, 2026.
